How To Get From Krabi To Railay Beach

The land of some of Asia finest beaches, scenic jungle treks, limestone cliffs, and spectacular underwater world, Krabi is Thailand’s top tourist destination. The province is home to Phi Phi islands, Ao Nang Beach and the tiny yet fabulous Railay Beach.

The Railay peninsula is a small beach comprising of only four pristine beaches. It is located between Krabi Town and Ao Nang, and is only accessible by boat. In fact, Railay only has footpaths – so no bus, car or longtail boats can help you reach there or navigate inside. It is just right for a lazy yet adventurous trip in Thailand.

So, if you’re in Krabi, looking for a day trip to the finest beach here, then Railay is the place to be. You can travel here yourself or via an agent. Here’s how.

1. Travel Agent

This is a preferred option for most, as it is less hassle; however, it can be slightly more expensive than arranging it yourself. The difference is only 50 to 80 THB (Rs 112- 179, US$ 1.5 to 2.4).

Near Krabi’s riverside is where the action happens. You can get a cab or reach the riverside in Krabi town, where you will find plenty of agents who can help you arrange your transport to Railay Beach.

They will help you book a one-way ticket for THB 250 (Rs 560, US$ 7.63). This includes a pick-up from your accommodation anywhere in Krabi to Klong Jilad Pier, the province’s main pier, and from there a boat to Railay Beach.

If you’re in the town centre or downtown Krabi, then it would take a five to ten minutes to get to the pier. Once you get there, you will need to wait till other passengers board. In fact, the boat might wait to get full too. This is fast and easy during season time. From the pier, it will take about 25 to 30 minutes to reach Railay East, from where you can walk to Railay West, where the main beach is.

2. Private Transport

If you want a bit of adventure and have more time on your hands, then opt for a private transport to Railay Beach from Krabi Town.

You can start by reaching the Klong Jilan Pier by local taxis, or songthaews, that are there on your route. These usually come at 20-minute intervals. However, to find one that is on your route and had space for you and your luggage, can be a challenge. You can take the help of locals there, or ask your hotel to book one for you. The cost is just THB 12 (Rs 27, US$ 0.3).

Once on the pier, you will need to get a one-way ticket for THB 200 (Rs 448, US$ 6). The boats run every half an hour between 8.30am and 5pm. As mentioned, it would take you 25 to 30 minutes to get there and another two or three minutes to reach the main beach at Railay.

You could also get private boats for TBH 900 to 1,200 (Rs 2017 to 2689, US$ 27 to 36), if you are travelling with family or need to travel at a specific time.

Another alternative to reach Railay is the Ao Nammao Pier. It would take about THB 60 (Rs 134, US$ 2) to reach here in songthaew, but the boat fare is only THB 80 (Rs 179, US$ 2.5) to Railay beach.

Note: From Railay East, the last boat to Klong Jilad Pier and Ao Nammao Pier leaves at 5pm. So you need to plan to be on it, else you will have to spend the night at Railay. It has enough hotels, but it would be advisable to be back to your original accommodation, so you can enjoy the nightlife there.
