Walk amidst waterfalls, rivers and vast greens at the Doi Suthep-Pui National Park. Ideal for hiking and cycling, the park is adorned by quiet water cascades, scenic viewpoints and hidden caves. There are hill tribes living around the area that draw a distinct parallel between city life and the rural. There are three peaks, Doi Suthep, Doi Buakha and Doi Pui; the latter stands tallest at 1685 m above sea level.
What’s So Awesome About It
There are several reasons why you should do this trek. For lovers of history and architecture, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, siting near the Doi Suthep peak, the hike is worth every penny. For nature lovers, the park offers deciduous forests that run along the river, nesting striking spots for a quick lunch or camping experience. You will find oaks, trees of the magnolia family, and evergreen forests once above 1000 m. Spotting rare species of animals such as wild boar, Malayan porcupine and even the Asian black bear if you’re lucky, is a sheer possibility. Birds like the grey-headed canary-flycatcher, the great barbet and Yunnan fulvetta inhabit the greens.
What’s The Catch
Although the shorter trails are well marked, the longer the trails are confusing and not well maintained, making it difficult for first timers to hike alone. Because of the deciduous forests around, you might encounter snakes on the trails. Travel with a local guide if you wish to trek along the longer trails.
Things To Keep In Mind
Carry swimwear if you plan to take a dip in the waterfall. If you wish to stay at a campsite or spend the night near the waterfall, a few bungalows and available for booking.
How To Reach There
To get to DoiSuthep you can take a taxi service from Chiang Mai costing you approximately 1,300 THB. If you are traveling from other places, get to Arcade Bus Station and take a taxi from here to the main gate of the National Park.
Make sure you are moderately trained for this hike. If you do not wish to make it to the summit, you can walk the easy trail in about 50 mins heading from Chiang Mai old town.
